Meet Our Team

Meet the 2018 Board Members of The Hiking Organisation of Southern Africa.  All board members serve the Hiking fraternity in a voluntary capacity and draw no remuneration.

Jaco van Heerden,


Jaco is an outdoorsman and adventurer at heart and if he could, he would spend every week end camping, cycling or Hiking.  He has completed a Mechanical Engineering Degree, Project Management Certificate and compliments this with a Walking Leaders Award from the South African Mountaineering Development and Training Trust (MDT).He is actively part of the Voortrekker organisation and has been the course leader for the last 4 years at Thaba Fieldwork camp, where he presents courses on hiking and nature conservation. He has been instrumental in building hiking relationships with schools and the youth in various provinces.  The Hiking Organisation of Southern Africa welcomes his passion for the young generation of hikers.  Jaco is fully supported to empower and encourage the development of hiking clubs at schools and youth gatherings.
Gerhardt van Greunen,


Gerhardt completed a Trails Planning course at the Tukkies University and is a qualified Senior Green Flag Trail Auditor.  He has successfully built mountain biking trails on St Helena Island and is responsible for the Green Flag Audit of the Peak Hiking Trail in St Helena.Gerhardt has established educational walking trails for school learners.  He is regularly relied on for the provision of training courses on the subjects of ecology and eco-tourism. The Hiking Organisation of Southern Africa is grateful to have Gerhardt’s years of hiking and eco-tourism experience to rely on.
Albert Bossert


Albert has been planning, developing and building Hiking Trails in Southern Africa for more than 3 decades.  He is a qualified with a Technical Diploma in Civil Engineering and is a qualified Trail Builder and Green Flag Auditor.  As a founding member of the Hiking Organisation of Southern Africa, Albert has been the President for 8 years.He now, successfully runs his own trail building and maintenance business, Boskamproetes, and has led the team on various trail building and rehabilitation projects, in Southern Africa.

His more recent hiking trail development projects include the building of the Khomas Hochland Hiking Trail that covers 91kms over 6 days in Namibia, as well as the Rhebok Trail, a 2 day 32 km trail in the Golden Gate National Park, in the Free State South Africa.  He has also successfully led various Clean Up Projects in the Fish River Canyon.  He is well known for his creative ideas and supports the Hiking Organisation of Southern Africa with his entrepreneurial creativity.  Albert is an Honorary member of the Hiking Organisation of Southern Africa.

Leon Hugo, Quality Audit Lead


Prof Leon Hugo is a qualified with a Doctorate of Philosophy in Eco Tourism.  He has lectured at the University of Stellenbosch and at the University of Pretoria.  Prof Hugo has planned in excess of 150 hiking trails in SA and abroad.

He has developed and managed the Green Flag Accreditation system for hiking trails. He has been commissioned by the government of Nepal to Green Flag audit trails in the Himalayas, as well as the Australian and Peruvian on various trail Projects.He is the author and distributor of the book: Environmental Management: An Ecological guide to sustainable living in SA, as well as 2 additional books on Hiking Trails in SA.   In his active spare time, he co-manages www.econatics.co.za – the weekly updated website for environmental issues as a supplement to the textbook: Environmental management.  He is a founding father of the Hiking Organisation of Southern Africa,  remains committed to the organisation and adds tremendous value to our team. Leon is an Honorary member of the Hiking Organisation of Southern Africa.
